OMATIVE and Hyundai WIA are developing a "Real-Time, In-Process Tool Wear/Breakage Monitoring and Chatter Control System"
The companies are jointly developing a real-time, vibration-analysis-based, diagnostic and control system to detect small tool and tool insert breakage, as well as vibration-related machine events - including chatter. In addition, the proposed system will develop a method to control tool chatter in real time. When completed, the system will provide a long-sought solution to problems that occur during automated mass production machining of parts in automotive manufacturing. These machining problems negatively impact productivity and costs; solving them will lead to greater productivity and lower costs and ultimately improve part quality and safety.
